Job Description

Overview

The Division of Family and Child Health at the Department of Health has an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional interested in public health communication. We are looking for a well-organized person skilled at communicating clearly who wants to help provide the tools that make Vermont families thrive.


The Division of Family and Child Health has over a dozen programs covering topics including injury and violence prevention, youth and adult suicide, road user safety, and safe sleep, perinatal and early childhood programs like home visiting and WIC, sexual and reproductive health, children with special health needs, and more. This position will support the division's communication work in a variety of ways, including managing educational materials, graphic design, coordinating social media and website updates and analytics, and supporting public health emergency response.


This position will work under the general supervision of the Family and Child Health Information Director.


The State of Vermont requires employees to work in the Waterbury office three days per week, with two days of teleworking available.


Examples of work include:

  • Assist in the management of public outreach, social media, and digital campaigns with the goal of affecting behavior change and improving health outcomes.
  • Assist in creating, producing, translating, and managing the distribution of public information materials.
  • Write and update content on the Health Department website.
  • Collaborate with program staff to distill complex and often highly technical information into information that people in Vermont can use to stay healthy and safe.
  • Serve in a variety of communication capacities during public health events and emergencies.
  • Support and assist in the development of specific grant-related or required activities as assigned.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in both office and field settings. Some work outside of normal office hours may be required. Stress may be encountered from tight deadlines, conflicting opinions, and as the result of public information and communication decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma AND four (4) years of relevant experience in public health communications, marketing, advertising, public relations, or a closely related field.

OR

Associate’s degree in public health, journalism, communications, marketing, advertisement, public relations, education or other closely related field AND three (3) years or more of experience at a professional level in the private or public sector in marketing, advertisement, communications, or public relations.

OR

Bachelor's degree in public health, journalism, communications, marketing, advertisement, public relations, education or other closely related field AND two (2) years or more of experience at a professional level in the private or public sector in marketing, advertisement, communications, or public relations.

OR

Master's degree in public health, journalism, communication, marketing, advertisement, public relations, education or other closely related field AND one (1) year or more of experience at a professional level in the private or public sector in marketing, advertisement, communications, or public relations.
