Job Responsibilities
- Brand Management & Marketing/Communications Strategy
- Oversee BKVF’s brand identity for consistency and alignment across all channels and materials.
- Support brand expansion as directed (e.g., legacy/tribute branding elements).
- Own holistic marketing and communications planning for each BKVF initiative, campaign, and event, defining goals, key messages, audiences, channels, and timelines rather than executing channel-by-channel in isolation.
- Build an integrated marketing plan for each major campaign or event that ties together email, PR, brand/design, merchandise, social/digital, and grassroots efforts into one coherent strategy.
- Set the marketing calendar and priorities in alignment with organizational goals, and bring recommendations on positioning, messaging, and tactics.
- Evaluate the performance of marketing and communications efforts across initiatives and adjust strategy and tactics based on results.
- Design Management
- Own BKVF’s day-to-day design needs in Canva, developing new designs and updating existing ones, on brand and on deadline, including digital graphics for campaigns, email, and social; posters and collateral materials; donor materials (e.g., sponsorship packets, appeals, stewardship pieces); presentation decks; and event signage.
- Public Relations and Media Relations
- Draft and distribute press releases and manage media relations tied to major, newsworthy organizational happenings (e.g., the Gala, legacy initiatives, significant milestones).
- Website, Digital Marketing, and Social Media Coordination
- Serve as BKVF’s main point of contact for its external marketing/social media contractor or agency, holding bi-weekly meetings and managing briefs, approvals, and timelines.
- Direct and coordinate (rather than personally execute) the external agency’s work on digital advertising (Meta ads and ad back-end) and social media content and campaigns.
- Manage the website relationship, sending updates to OHM for implementation or handling directly when that is more efficient.
- Manage all inbound social media direct messages and reposting of user-generated content
- Email Marketing and Donor Communications
- Develop a thoughtful email strategy that supports BKVF’s campaigns and maintains regular, meaningful contact with donors and supporters.
- Own email end-to-end (build, segment, schedule, send, and report) via Constant Contact, anchored by a monthly e-newsletter and supplemented by timely event e-vites and e-blasts.
- Align the email calendar to BKVF’s promotional and campaign calendar, and segment audiences for relevant, well-timed sends.
- Grassroots and Guerrilla Marketing
- Design and execute targeted, nontraditional marketing efforts to reach specific audiences that traditional email and social channels don’t effectively reach, such as recruiting runners for the Marine Corps Marathon team.
- Identify and engage relevant local communities, groups, and networks in person and online (e.g., running clubs, veteran service organizations, military-connected employers, gyms, and community boards) to build grassroots participation and awareness.
- Develop low-cost, high-impact tactics (e.g., flyering, tabling, word-of-mouth ambassador programs, local partnerships, and peer-to-peer outreach) tailored to each campaign’s specific recruitment or participation goals.
- Merchandise Management
- Manage BKVF’s merchandise store on Shopify, including product listings, inventory, pricing, and order fulfillment coordination.
- Develop and maintain on-brand merchandise designs in coordination with Canva design work and BKVF’s brand guidelines.
- Coordinate merchandise promotion and sales in connection with campaigns and events, including the Cultivating Courage Gala, Marine Corps Marathon, Golf Tournament, Fishing Tournament, and Year-End Giving.
- Serve as liaison to BKVF’s merchandise print vendor.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Prior experience in marketing, communications, or development operations, ideally within a nonprofit or fundraising environment.
- Experience supporting fundraising events (e.g., galas, tournaments, endurance or peer-to-peer fundraising events) is preferred.
- Technical and Platform Skills
- Working knowledge of email marketing platforms (Constant Contact preferred), CRM/fundraising platforms, Canva design tools, and Shopify or similar e-commerce platforms for merchandise management.
- Experience directing or coordinating with outside marketing, advertising, or social media agencies, including managing briefs, approvals, and timelines.
- Comfort with standard productivity tools (email, calendar, video conferencing) in a remote work environment.
- Core Competencies and Attributes
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple campaigns, deadlines, and stakeholders at once.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort drafting donor- and media-facing content.
- High degree of professionalism, discretion, and attention to brand consistency; alignment with BKVF’s mission and values; and a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach.
- Must pass a background check and adhere to BKVF’s confidentiality and ethical guidelines.
