Job Description

The client is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Executive Director, with the aim of growing the organization and championing the humanities in higher education and beyond. The position presents an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of the organization amidst significant challenges and opportunities. The Executive Director will support humanities practitioners, promote the value of the humanities, and enhance the organization's presence as a leading advocate in the field. A critical focus will be enhancing diversity among staff and members while fostering an inclusive culture that supports professional growth and raises public awareness of key humanities issues. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the financial sustainability of the organization by maintaining the excellence of its programs and publications and securing grant funding and donor contributions. The ideal candidate will have extensive administrative experience in academia, nonprofits, or related fields, and will possess the energy necessary to work with elected leadership and membership to advance the organization's goals. The candidate must bring a blend of leadership and management skills to collaborate with the Executive Council on strategy and policy and to lead a staff of nearly 100 in serving the organization's membership effectively. The role requires a PhD in a relevant field and experience in higher education, with a broad understanding of its current landscape and challenges. The successful candidate will have demonstrated public advocacy in the humanities and senior-level leadership experience in managing skilled staff, programming, budgeting, strategic planning, and fostering a strong organizational culture. Experience with publications and member relations is preferred. Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately, with the aim of filling the position by February 2027.
